Sporting a compact and sleek form factor, along with Fujifilm's advanced X-series imaging capabilities, the XQ2 Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot featuring a 12MP 2/3" X-Trans CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II to produce high-resolution stills and full HD videos. The combination of the image sensor and processor enables a sensitivity range to ISO 12800, continuous shooting up to 12 fps, and also gives quick performance abilities to all aspects of the camera. Fujifilm's proprietary X-Trans sensor uses a unique randomized pixel array in order to avoid the use of a resolution-reducing optical low-pass filter, therefore providing images with the utmost sharpness and clarity.
Complementing the imaging capabilities, the XQ2 also features a 4x Fujinon zoom lens, which covers 25-100mm equivalent focal lengths and features a fast f/1.8-4.9 maximum aperture. Aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements are integrated into the optical design to minimize aberrations and produce sharp, clear imagery and an HT-EBC coating has been applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting. Benefitting the reach of this lens is optical image stabilization, which compensates for camera shake to ensure sharp imagery when working with slower shutter speeds or longer focal lengths.
The lens and imaging components reside within a svelte black-colored body, which is accentuated by a physical mode dial, pop-up flash, and a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity further avails the ability to wireless share imagery to linked mobile devices or print using the instax SHARE printer, and a range of Film Simulation modes are also available for emulating the look of Fujifilm films.
12MP 2/3" X-Trans CMOS II Sensor
A large 2/3" CMOS image sensor is integrated into the XQ2 to provide notable image quality and detail. Using Fujifilm's unique X-Trans pixel array, the sensor is designed with a randomized pixel pattern to eliminate the need of an optical low-pass filter for reducing moiré and aliasing. By removing this filter from the design, higher image sharpness is possible. Lens Modulation Optimizer (LMO) factors are also taken into account using the EXR Processor II, which helps to automatically compensate for aberrations and diffraction blur in order to produce images with the utmost inherent sharpness. The image sensor also integrates over 100,000 phase-detection pixels into the sensor's design for improved autofocus performance without affecting image quality.
The X-Trans sensor also pairs well with the EXR Processor II to provide highly effective noise reduction and a clean signal-to-noise ratio. This enables smoother-looking imagery that becomes especially apparent when photographing in low-light situations with a maximum native sensitivity level of ISO 12800.
EXR Processor II
Aside from benefitting low-light performance, the EXR Processor II also provides quick performance throughout the entire camera system, including a top continuous shooting rate of 12 fps or up to 4.7 fps with continuous AF. The camera start-up time is about 0.99 seconds, shutter lag is about 0.015 seconds, AF speed is 0.06 seconds, and the shooting interval time is about 0.3 seconds.
Fujinon 25-100mm f/1.8-4.9 Lens
The built-in 4x optical zoom lens provides an equivalent focal length range of 25-100mm with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8-4.9. The inclusion of four aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements helps to reduce the appearance of aberrations throughout the zoom range while also significantly contributing to overall image sharpness. A seven-blade diaphragm also contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality when using shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. Lens elements are treated with a multi-layer HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) to minimize lens flare and ghosting while shooting for greater light transmittance and contrast within imagery.
Benefitting working in difficult lighting conditions, lens-shift type optical image stabilization is also available to counter the effects of camera shake by up to three stops.
Camera Design
The compact and lightweight body design incorporates a highly aesthetic black covering and integrates a range of physical controls, including an intuitive mode dial, a customizable control ring, customizable E-Fn button, and a Super Intelligent pop-up flash within its minimal appearance. Additionally, the sleek design of the camera places all rear controls at the right side for easier one-handed control. While the XQ2 exhibits a small overall form-factor, a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation and features a wide viewing angle for greater visibility during use.
The control ring can be configured to adjust a range of frequently used settings, including program shift, shutter speed, zoom, scene position, aperture, advanced mode, and advanced filter. Additionally, customizable settings include exposure compensation, manual focus, ISO, film simulation, white balance, and continuous shooting rate.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity permits instant wireless transferring of up to 30 images at once to linked mobile devices for direct sharing online. Mobile devices can also be used to embed location data into the photos taken with the XQ2 for geotagging. Additionally, the X-A2 is also compatible with the optional instax SHARE Printer, when using its dedicated app, for on-the-go printing of your favorite snapshots.
Film Simulation Modes
Taking advantage of Fujifilm's vast history in traditional film-based photography, the XQ2 integrates several Film Simulation modes to mimic the look and feel of some Fujifilm's classic reversal film types: Provia offers natural-looking tones for everyday shooting, Velvia produces a more dramatic and rich tonality with deeper color saturation, and Astia gives less contrast for a softer depiction of skin tones. A Classic Chrome mode can also be used to create a nostalgic appearance characterized by muted tones and deep color reproduction. Additionally, Black & White and Sepia modes are also available for a classic, monochromatic appearance.
Other Camera Features
Full HD 1080p video recording up to 60 fps is supported and the XQ2 also features a built-in stereo microphone.
Phase- and contrast-detection AF methods combine to realize fast focusing performance in a variety of lighting conditions. When working in AF-C mode, a Multi-Target AF mode can be used to select up to nine focus areas, which pair with face detection functions, for greater focusing accuracy and speed.
A histogram or electronic level can be displayed on the rear LCD during shooting.
Multiple exposure mode gives you the ability to overlay subsequently-recorded images in-camera.
Pro Focus mode with face detection is a focus bracketing mode designed to emulate the shallow depth of field look that is achievable with larger image sensor sizes, such as those found in DSLRs. This mode records sequential exposures with different focus positions, then combines them into a single image in order to blur the background more effectively.
Pro Low-Light mode records a series of four exposures at once, then combines them to reduce noise and increase sensitivity when shooting in low-light conditions.
Image quality can be fine-tuned through the use of dedicated Color, Tone, and Sharpness adjustments.
Noise Reduction Control offers five different levels of noise reduction depending on whether sharpness or minimal noise is of priority.
Manual, Auto Area, Area Selection AF, Continuous AF, and Auto Tracking AF modes are available, and selectable AF settings benefit from a 49-point metering matrix in order to quickly achieve sharp focus on recognized subjects.
Benefitting manual focusing, Focus Peak Highlight is available, which uses bright color overlays on edges of contrast for easier recognition of in-focus regions.
Auto bracketing is possible for dynamic range, film simulation, auto exposure, and ISO sensitivity.
In-camera raw file processing lets you record your images in the uncompressed raw file format and process them prior to computer-based editing procedures. This enables you to modify the exposure, white balance, and other controls directly through the menu interface.
Shooting modes: Advanced SR AUTO, AUTO, Advanced Filter, Advanced Mode, Custom, Scene Position, Aperture Priority AE, Manual, Program AE, and Shutter Priority AE.
Advanced filters are available to creatively adjust the look of your imagery, and include Miniature, Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple), Toy Camera, Dynamic Tone, High Key, Low Key, Soft Focus, and Pop Color settings.
Motion Panorama 360 allows you to record expansive views up to 360° wide in a seamless, sweeping manner.
4x Intelligent Digital Zoom helps to extend the effective focal length, and pairs with the optical zoom to provide a total 16x zoom for working with distant subjects. SILKYPIX raw conversion software is included with the XQ2 for streamlined editing and processing of your files straight from the camera.
